The Confederacy of Corporate Councils is a massive, socially progressive nation, ruled by Chairman Pitsuwan with an iron fist, and renowned for its keen interest in outer space. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 4.923 billion enjoy great individual freedoms in everything except elections, which, where they exist at all, are populist shams for a dictatorship government that has no intention of ever giving up power.

People are now classified as male, female, or genderqueer, a new generation of aquariumless hotels are being built under government supervision, all recreational drugs are legal, and young children are regularly seen wagering pocket money at blackjack tables. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Corporate Councils's national animal is the Octopus, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, its national religion is Materialism, and its currency is the Corporate Scrip.
