Its compassionate, intelligent population of 992 million love a good election, and the government gives them plenty of them. Universities tend to be full of students debating the merits of various civil and political rights, while businesses are tightly regulated and the wealthy viewed with suspicion.

High-income earners pay a 100% tax rate, the importance of winning Olympic gold medals is indoctrinated from an early age, charged suspects often have to wait years before the courts have room to judge their trial, and anti-government web sites are springing up. Crime is totally unknown. Chico Buarque's national animal is the Frog, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the Chico Buarque LP.
