Its hard-nosed, intelligent population of 8.496 billion hold their civil and political rights very dear, although the wealthy and those in business tend to be viewed with suspicion.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Education, Law & Order, and Religion & Spirituality. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of underground. The average income tax rate is 79%, and even higher for the wealthy. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.

All forms of advertising are banned, innocent defendants often plea guilty for fear of receiving a much harsher sentence before jury, same-sex marriages are increasingly common, and all major public areas are watched by police surveillance cameras. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Bjaweir's national animal is the gnome, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the shiny rock.
