The Federal Republic of Bassyruk is a colossal, safe nation, ruled by Tom Aderbal with an iron fist, and renowned for its museums and concert halls. Its compassionate, cynical population of 5.052 billion are ruled by a mostly-benevolent dictator, who grants the populace the freedom to live their own lives but watches carefully for anyone to slip up.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Defence, Law & Order, and Healthcare. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Nalrayaat. The average income tax rate is 61%, and even higher for the wealthy. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.

Students who refuse to pray are expelled from school, tax evaders are regularly visited by agents of the Bassyruk Blood Tithe, unstable couples are known to break up over which one gets parental leave, and a National Academy regulates grammar and usage. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Bassyruk's national animal is the chimera, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, its national religion is Christianity , and its currency is the Bassyta.
