The Grand Republic of Austiana is a massive, socially progressive nation, ruled by President David Hill with an even hand, and renowned for its anti-smoking policies. Its hard-nosed, intelligent population of 2.928 billion have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Defence, Law & Order, and Education. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Ania. The average income tax rate is 77%, and even higher for the wealthy. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Arms Manufacturing, Automobile Manufacturing, and Door-to-door Insurance Sales industries.

Pristine wilderness has been trashed in the quest for cheaper oil, students cut up leftover National Dollars during Arts and Crafts, Austiana-made cars tend to catch fire in people's driveways, and the institution of marriage is held sacred and strictly enforced. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Austiana's national animal is the Spotted Lion, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the National Dollar.
