The Empire of Ater Nox is a colossal, economically powerful nation, ruled by Emperor Nox with an even hand, and renowned for its restrictive gun laws. The compassionate population of 7.262 billion Aterians are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Education, Law & Order, and Healthcare. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Ateria City. The average income tax rate is 100%. A powerhouse of a private sector is dominated by the Book Publishing industry.

Fewer people are bathing as citizens must show ration stamps before they can turn on their faucets, the government has started a campaign to crack down on road rage and encourage alternate means of commuting, guns are banned, and children as young as twelve are conscripted into the armed forces. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Ater Nox's national animal is the Phoenix, which is also the nation's favorite main course, its national religion is a major religion, and its currency is the Aterian Dollar.

Ater Nox is ranked 2nd in 10000 Islands and 254th in the world for Largest Public Transport Department, scoring 314 on the Societal Mobility Rating.
