The enormous government is mainly concerned with Law & Order, although Education and Defence are secondary priorities. The average income tax rate is 33%, but much higher for the wealthy. A healthy private sector is dominated by the Book Publishing industry.

Roads are often attended by round-the-clock construction crews, new urban roads are threatening city parks, graffiti artists spend lengthy periods of time in jail, and students are known to arrive at school in their pyjamas. Crime is well under control, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Appalecia's national animal is the eagle, and its currency is the dollar.
