The United States of Alsted is a colossal, socially progressive nation, ruled by a federal presidency with a fair hand, and renowned for its restrictive gun laws. Its hard-nosed, intelligent population of 8.603 billion love a good election, and the government gives them plenty of them. Universities tend to be full of students debating the merits of various civil and political rights, while businesses are tightly regulated and the wealthy viewed with suspicion.

The government has ordered a moratorium on referenda, citizens are enjoying a recent large cut in taxes, the government has cut taxes in the face of widespread tax evasion, and private business has started paving paradises and putting up parking lots. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Alsted's national animal is the Snowy Owl, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the Alstedian Dollar.
