The United States of Alsted is a gargantuan, cultured nation, ruled by a federal presidency with an even hand, and renowned for its keen interest in outer space. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 11.416 billion have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Education, Defence, and Healthcare. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Port Alsteden. The average income tax rate is 47%, but much higher for the wealthy. A powerhouse of a private sector is dominated by the Book Publishing industry.

Private business has started paving paradises and putting up parking lots, medical lawsuits are out of control, all mothers are allowed six months fully-paid maternity leave, and new safety regulations require all cars manufactured in Alsted to be bombproof. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Alsted's national animal is the Snowy Owl, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the Alstedian Dollar.

Alsted is ranked 418th in Europe and 119,783rd in the world for Stupidest Citizens, scoring 6 on the Average Edu-UNtellignce® Test Score.
