The Kingdom of Alestania is a massive, genial nation, ruled by Lord Alexander Beilby with an even hand, and renowned for its national health service. Its compassionate population of 1.521 billion are highly moralistic and fiercely conservative, in the sense that they tend to believe most things should be outlawed. People who have good jobs and work quietly at them are lauded; others are viewed with suspicion.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Education, and the Environment. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Alestania City. The average income tax rate is 69%. A very small private sector is dominated by the Automobile Manufacturing industry.

Many parents are becoming frustrated with their children's choices in spouses, soldiers are slaughtered in their thousands due to lack of training, all weapon research has been banned, and a new generation of aquariumless hotels are being built under government supervision. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Alestania's national animal is the Snow Leopard, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the Beil.
