The Republic of Alentejo is a huge, cultured nation, notable for its devotion to social welfare. Its hard-nosed, intelligent population of 900 million are free to do what they want with their own bodies, and vote for whoever they like in elections; if they go into business, however, they are regulated to within an inch of their lives.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it concentrates mainly on Education, although Social Equality and Social Welfare are on the agenda. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Salgueiros. The average income tax rate is 73%, and even higher for the wealthy. A robust private sector is led by the Book Publishing industry, followed by Cheese Exports and Woodchip Exports.

The "Underwear of Women in Power" issue of The Salgueiros Times is sold out, education and welfare spending are on the rise, conductors wield diamond-encrusted batons to fit in with their freshly gilded surroundings, and even the most lowly council pen-pusher has the same political power as a senior minister. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is moderate, and the police force struggles against a lack of funding and a high mortality rate. Alentejo's national animal is the javali, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the corona.

Alentejo is ranked 2nd in Macaronesia and 91,465th in the world for Largest Trout Fishing Sector, scoring -4 on the Nemo Depletion Efficiency Index.
