The Republic and Commonwealth of Akimonad is a colossal, socially progressive nation, ruled by Jonathan Swiftsure Quigley with a fair hand, and notable for its unlimited-speed roads. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 9.4 billion hold their civil and political rights very dear, although the wealthy and those in business tend to be viewed with suspicion.

There is no government in the normal sense of the word; however, a small group of community-minded, liberal individuals is effectively ruled by the Department of Law & Order, with areas such as Social Equality and the Environment receiving almost no funds by comparison. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Kent. Income tax is unheard of. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Arms Manufacturing industry, followed by Uranium Mining and Information Technology.

Students are known to arrive at school in their pyjamas, army rations are served on silver platters, citizens are remarkably well involved in the political process, and cheese has become the new icon of political dissent. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Akimonad's national animal is the Grue, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the spesmilo.
