The Empire of Adeptus astrates is a huge, economically powerful nation, renowned for its sprawling nuclear power plants. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 716 million are rabid consumers, partly through choice and partly because the government tells them to and dissenters tend to vanish from their homes at night.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt, pro-business government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Defence, Law & Order, and Commerce. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of The Imperial palace. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 69%. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Arms Manufacturing, Information Technology, and Tourism industries.

Suppression of pro-democracy protests is a daily occurrence, criminals are thrown to the space marines to repay their debt to society, the government strictly regulates whale harvest quotas, and travellers are often forcibly evicted by torch-bearing mobs. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Adeptus astrates's national animal is the space marine, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the gbp.
