The United Terran Alliance of The Fedral Union is a gargantuan, socially progressive nation, ruled by President Richard C Sagen with an even hand, and renowned for its absence of drug laws. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 18.056 billion enjoy some of the most opulent lifestyles in the region, unless they are unemployed or working-class, in which case they are variously starving to death or crippled by easily preventable diseases.

There is no government in the normal sense of the word; however, a small group of community-minded, liberal, pro-business individuals devotes most of its attentions to Defence, with areas such as the Environment and Religion & Spirituality receiving almost no funds by comparison. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Union City. Income tax is unheard of. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Book Publishing industry, followed by Arms Manufacturing and Uranium Mining.

Organ donation rates are among the lowest in the region, the government has cut taxes in the face of widespread tax evasion, the government has ordered a moratorium on referenda, and the nation's leader appoints ministers directly. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is crippling, probably because of the country's utter lack of prisons. The Fedral Union's national animal is the Eagel, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the Terran Credit.
