The Libertarian Republic of Sunset is a gargantuan, socially progressive nation, ruled by Erika Silaco with a fair hand, and notable for its national health service. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 16.404 billion live in a state of perpetual fear, as a complete breakdown of social order has led to the rise of order through biker gangs.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt, liberal, pro-business government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Defence, Education, and Law & Order. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of The Sunset Mainframe. Income tax is unheard of. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Gambling, Information Technology, and Book Publishing industries.

The government has cut its subsidies for all special interest groups, Sunset's children are widely acknowledged as the most foul-mouthed in the region, Pinkerton agents are called in to forcibly break up white collar strikes, and protesters are up in arms over new nuclear power stations. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Sunset's national animal is the Martian Penguin, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the Di-Coin.
