The Margravate of Paloni is a gargantuan, economically powerful nation, remarkable for its barren, inhospitable landscape. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 13.612 billion are rabid consumers, partly through choice and partly because the government tells them to and dissenters tend to vanish from their homes at night.

The government -- a sprawling, bureaucracy-choked morass -- is mainly concerned with Law & Order, although Religion & Spirituality and Defence are secondary priorities. The government extracts trade concessions from poor nations in exchange for humanitarian aid, Rupert Bear is considered to be the most risqué TV programme in Paloni, the education system is famed for its taxing exams, and citizens are expected to be proficient in at least five languages. Crime is a problem. Paloni's national animal is the Red Horse, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the Reichsmark.
