The People's Democratic Republic of Yelda is a gargantuan, economically powerful nation, ruled by Chairman Diřgę with an iron fist, and remarkable for its complete lack of prisons. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 16.135 billion enjoy great individual freedoms in everything except elections, which, where they exist at all, are populist shams for a dictatorship government that has no intention of ever giving up power.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, liberal, pro-business government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Defence, Education, and Commerce. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Ikat Yeldashæ. The average income tax rate is 100%. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Arms Manufacturing industry, followed by Uranium Mining and Book Publishing.

Yelda has designated Ikat Yeldashæ as its capital city, the tenet of free speech is held dear, Yeldan Badürian Church has been named as Yelda's national religion, and Chairman Diřgę has just been declared ruler of Yelda in an international press conference. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Yelda's national animal is the Klollen, which is also the nation's favorite main course, its national religion is Yeldan Badürian Church, and its currency is the New Yeldan Pound.

Yelda is ranked 10th in The Pleiades and 3,109th in the world for Most Rebellious Youth, scoring 27 on the Stark-Dean Displacement Index.
